The Great South American Journey: Antarctica

After a splendid couple of days in South Georgia, we sailed towards Antarctica. It was atleast a two day crossing across the sea but the excitement and the anticipation grew with every passing moment. For many, this is the last box to be ticked on their check list: The 7th continent. For me, it was just exciting to be part of something new and very different. I had seen pictures and videos of the continent. I knew it was special. But I had no idea, how spectacular it really is till I reached there. On our way to Antarctica, we … Continue reading The Great South American Journey: Antarctica

The Great South American Journey: South Georgia

After Falkland Islands, we headed to South Georgia. South Georgia is a group of islands, which in my view, plays hosts to some of the most amazing wildlife in the region. It, unfortunately, also plays host to a piece of dark history and also to a story of human resilience. When we first approached the shores of South Georgia, we saw hundreds of fur seals. These seals are most aggressive, fighting for territory, defending their harems against potential rivals, during mating seasons. So we had to be very careful. A couple of time, we couldnt land. We were told that … Continue reading The Great South American Journey: South Georgia

The Great South American Journey: Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands has always be intriguing. It came into focus first in 1982 with the war between Argentina and the UK. As recently as a few years back, Top Gear brought it back into focus. Jeremy Clarkson had a number plate FLK1982 which the Argentinians took to be a mockery. The Top Gear team was thrown out of Argentina. Locally the islands are known as Islas Malvinas. When I boarded G expedition heading towards Falkland Islands, I was intrigued by the politics of the islands. What I saw and came back was the wildlife, the scenic beauty and ofcourse … Continue reading The Great South American Journey: Falkland Islands

The Great South American Journey: G Expedition cruise

We boarded the G Expedition ship around 4pm on November 24th. It was very exciting to finally start the journey to Falkland Islands with the ultimate destination Antarctica. The trip details are as follows: The Spirit of Shackelton The G Expedition is a 130 person (excluding staff and crew) ship designed to navigate through the waters quickly. It is a converted car/passenger ferry though one cant tell from being on the ship (unless you are an expert in these matters). I had originally booked the cheapest possible accommodation (4 bed bunk) but I was upgraded to a twin bed cabin … Continue reading The Great South American Journey: G Expedition cruise

The Great South American Journey: Ushuaia

‚ÄčI have been waiting for this moment for a long time. On Nov 18th, I finally boarded the plane to set off for my very own South American Journey. It took almost 30 hours to get to Ushuaia from London and at the end of it, I was quite exhausted. I had boarded the plane at London City Airport at 11am. However I was at the airport at 6:30am. Quite early because I had to skip the morning Jubilee line rush hour traffic. From London I flew to Rome where I had a 4 hour stop over. During this break … Continue reading The Great South American Journey: Ushuaia
